There are multiple developmental stages in dogs and for most dog guardians, the adolescent phase can be the most trying. Never fear! You can get through this phase with a smile on your face.

Dogs move through puppyhood, into adolescence and on into adulthood. Each stage brings about typical species behaviour.

The adolescent developmental period begins around 6 months of age and lasts till around 18-24 months. This varies by breed and these ages are approximate (just as children reach puberty at different ages). Because of the brain changes, hormonal changes and growth of a dog`s body, adog behaviour will also change.

Adolescence is when puppies become more independent, and more interested in the outside world. They can lose their understanding of the training they`ve had. Teenage dogs have a harder time paying attention to you because everything else is so stimulating. 

Instead of becoming frustrated, it`s important to focus on what you can do.

The journey through adolescence can feel like an overwhelming challenge at times, but it doesn`t need to! Five core areas from the basis of The Thriving Teen Program to ensure your teenage tearaways grows up to be the dog of your dreams! 

In each sector you will build on core skills and progress through milestones in until you have mastered each area. For each you will find a checklist you can use to track your progress with your dog.

Teenage dogs are often kept at home more and for some, they don`t get to practice their skills. So it`s common for dogs who were well-trained and socialised as puppies to regress in both their training and socialisation as teenage dogs. They can develop fear or aggression, or become rusty in their ability to communicate with other dogs.

Hi, I`m Anita, the founder of Brilliant K9s Dog Training and Behaviour, a certified pro dog trainer. I specialise in building a bombproof relationship based on understanding your dog`s breed and their needs. I especially love working with challenging behaviours, and help you transform your frustrated high-drive dog to a settled calm companion that you can take anywhere and  prevent future behavioural problems like separation anxiety, reactivity, and the further effects of over or under socialisation at later stages in life.
